On 4 November at 11.30 a.m., it is exactly 150 years since Hamburg Süd was founded. Today, we are a global carrier and a proud member of the Maersk family. But what has been our trademark throughout our history still applies today and will continue to apply in the future: our consistent customer focus and proximity.
Global voyage of a special container during the pandemic
A special container of the shipping company Hamburg Süd set off on its journey in the spring of 2020. After being in use for almost 18 months and travelling to five continents around the world, the painted container is now back home in Hamburg – just in time for the 150th anniversary of Hamburg Süd.

Dear customers,
Hamburg Süd is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, and I am very pleased to be able to take over as the company’s CEO in these special times.
I have already been working at Hamburg Süd for over 17 years. For me, being CEO primarily means being your ambassador as well as speaking with you as often as possible – preferably in person, of course. 150 years is a very long stretch of time, and you – our customers – are the most important reason why Hamburg Süd is able to proudly celebrate this anniversary.

An unusual delivery: fresh water for sharks and polar bears
“Dear captain, could you kindly take on some seawater on your voyage to Rotterdam?” – When this email from Mirsada Mutapcic of the Diergaarde Blijdorp lands in Mark Langer’s email inbox, the captain knows that the zoo in Rotterdam needs some fresh water for its Oceanium. And that means it’s time to make an unusual “refuelling stop” on the open sea!
First carbon-neutral liner ship to be deployed already in 2023
A special ship will soon be joining the combined fleet of Maersk and Hamburg Süd: A new, methanol-fuelled feeder vessel will be deployed already in 2023, making it what is expected to be the first container ship in the world to operate on carbon-neutral fuels. This kind of ship was originally only scheduled to enter into service in 2030.
Starting in March: “Fiji Express – Regional New Zealand” service (FERN)
Hamburg Süd is now offering new and efficient direct connections between the North Island of New Zealand, the South Island of New Zealand, and the Fijian ports of Suva and Lautoka.
